As livestock producers experience the effects of animal diseases, biosecurity on farms has become a necessary reality. Developing a biosecurity plan requires the identification of all possible contamination routes, and to take appropriate action in order to prevent the infection from reaching and affecting livestock. 

Research performed at the University of Minnesota by Dr. Scott Dee has confirmed that one of these contamination routes is the aerosol transmission of PRRSv. Dr. Dee also confirmed that air filtration is necessary to avoid the aerial introduction of PRRSv into swine buildings, this is especially true in buildings that are situated in regions with a high density swine population.

Varifan and Noveko have developed an antimicrobial filter specifically designed for the swine industry.  The filter material is made up of specially made polypropylene strands that are molecularly impregnated with virucidal and bactericidal agents. As the air and dust molecules enter the filter, they are forced to bond or come into contact with the polypropylene strands (which contain the virucidal and bactericidal agents). Once in contact with the filter fibers, bacteria or viruses found on the dust or in the air will be neutralized, effectively stopping the spread of  diseases via aersol transmission.
